Curriculum

The Brooks Center for Spirituality offers a full range of spiritual education, from non-credit correspondence courses for personal enrichment only, through training for licensure as a practitioner, to completion of ministerial studies and ordination. Details of the various levels of study are outlined below.

If there are two students in the same family, purchase of more than one set of materials is optional.

Students are expected to complete a course within one year of enrollment. If there are special circumstances, a student may request an extension from the Regional Teaching Center involved.

Regional Teaching Centers are required to use standard materials supplied by the Brooks Center for Spirituality as the basis for their instruction.  Certification by the Regional Center of satisfactory completion of the Basic Courses is necessary in order for the student to receive credit from the Brooks Center for Spirituality.

Application Procedure

1.        Complete the Student Information Record.

2.       Submit a fee of $100 per course payable to the Brooks Center for Spirituality at the time the course is taken. (See Fee Schedule, page 16.) The student is responsible for seeing that a preliminary consultation is held with the Regional Center regarding payment options for local tuition fees and any other local requirements that may apply.)

ADVANCED STUDIES PROGRAMS

For admission to the courses of study that lead to the D.Sc. F. and licensure as a Practitioner/Teacher, a student must have previously completed the Basic Studies Program for credit.

THE FELLOW OF DIVINE SCIENCE CERTIFICATE AND LICENSURE AS PRACTIONER/TEACHER

In addition to completing the Practitioner Training coursework, a candidate for licensure as Practitioner/Teacher must observe the teaching of an entire Basic Studies course given in a Regional Teaching Center by a minister or practitioner recognized by the Brooks Center for Spirituality. If that minister or practitioner agrees, the candidate will lead the class on two or three occasions.

A candidate for licensure as a Practitioner/Teacher is also expected to read widely in Divine Science writings on spiritual healing as well as in other classic literature of the subject. The Brooks Center for Spirituality in Denver will provide a recommended bibliography upon request.

Students in this program are also encouraged to avail themselves of educational experiences available in local academic institutions, community education programs, and workshops offered by nationally-known spiritual leaders.

Application Procedure for Licensure

Prerequisites: Completion of the requirements for the Divine Science Graduate Certificate (D.S.G., page 11) and Practitioner/Teacher Training Program (page 13).

Apply in writing to the Regional Center to receive the D.S.G. Certificate and be licensed as a Practitioner/Teacher.

The fee for preparation and mailing of the certificate and the license, which are not automatically issued, is $25. (Of the $25 fee, $12.50 is payable to Brooks Center for Spirituality; the other half is retained by the Regional Teaching Center.)

.

MINISTERIAL TRAINING

Strong spiritual leaders are informed of the principles of spiritual psychology and of the history of their spiritual tradition, but above all they attend to the unfoldment and practice of their own relationship with God, both as individuals and as members of humankind.

A sensitive balance of acquired knowledge and spiritual development is the aim of the ministerial training offered by the Brooks Center for Spirituality.  The Center seeks to assist its students in striking this balance. It provides a rich body of knowledge in a variety of areas. In addition it teaches spiritual principles and the practical, individualized application and realization of those principles along with ways through which to impart these concepts to others.

Application Procedure

Prerequisites: Completion of the requirements for Divine Science Fellow (D.Sc.F.) and for licensing as a Divine Science Practitioner.

1.  Complete all records required by the Regional Teaching Center or the Brooks Center for Spirituality for the Ministerial Program.

2.  Submit any fees (see page 16) required by the Brooks Center for Spirituality or the Regional Teaching Center.

3.  Follow an individualized program leading to accumulation of 18 credits from elective sources for completion of ministerial studies (see page 15).

QUALIFICATION OF MINISTERIAL CANDIDATES

Graduation from the Brooks Center for Spirituality does not automatically guarantee ordination.  Becoming a minister is an important step that involves ongoing evaluation by a candidate’s Sponsor and Board of Review as well as the fulfillment of specific requirements.

ORDINATION BY THE BROOKS CENTER FOR SPIRITUALITY

The Brooks Center for Spirituality offers ordination in Divine Science or in the Christian Ministry of New Thought or both.

Ministerial candidates seeking ordination must follow this procedure:

I.  Application for Ministerial Internship

1.        The applicant must have satisfied all academic requirements (course work totaling 36 credits) and must have paid all fees. A set of written evaluations from the applicant’s instructors in all course work must be on file in both the Regional Teaching Center and the Brooks Center for Spirituality.

2.       The applicant must be interviewed and approved for internship by his/her regional Board of Review or (in regions where not enough ordained ministers are available to serve on a Board of Review) by his/her local minister and other members of a Board of Review appointed by the Director of the Brooks Center for Spirituality.

3.       The applicant must be appointed an Internship Sponsor by the constituted Board of Review. This Sponsor must be a minister ordained by Brooks.

Upon approval of a student’s Board of Review, the Center will authorize the student as a Ministerial Intern.  (Refer to page 15.)  Upon completion of the two-year Internship, the applicant may apply for ordination.
